In the past, IP systems were favored over analog systems because they performed better and had higher resolutions. But with advances in technology, analog systems have quickly progressed to be on par with IP systems. However, one feature that makes IP CCTV systems one step above analog systems even now is their ability to use PoE.

What is PoE?

PoE is short for Power over Ethernet. As the name suggests, this technology allows IP CCTV systems to send power and video data via an Ethernet cable. In a regular non-PoE system, each camera will have 2 separate wires that will connect the camera to 2 different things. The first wire will be connected to a power supply to run power to the camera while the second wire will be connected to an NVR to transmit data. PoE makes the wiring process easier because only one Ethernet cable will be needed for each camera, as opposed to 2 cables.

IP Setups Using PoE

Since there’s less cables to wire, IP CCTV systems that use PoE have more options and flexibility when it comes to installation. If the NVR already has PoE ports built-in, then each camera can be directly plugged into the ports with an Ethernet cable. The cameras will then draw power from the NVR which will be connected to a power supply.

If your NVR doesn’t have built-in PoE ports then you could use a PoE switch instead. A PoE switch is essentially a device that has several PoE ports built-in. To set this up, you would just plug the cameras into the ports on the PoE switch. The NVR does not have to be physically wired to the PoE switch because the 2 devices will be indirectly connected through the shared network. You can also use a PoE switch with an NVR that has built-in PoE ports if there’s not enough ports on the NVR to support the number of cameras you want to connect.

Benefits of Using PoE IP CCTV Systems

The purpose of using PoE IP CCTV systems is that it enables the user to run power and data over 1 cable. But what are the advantages associated with doing this?

  • Easier installation: The issue with non-PoE systems is that wiring can be a hassle. Since there’s so many wires that need to be connected, strategic planning must be done to ensure that each camera is properly placed in a position where the wires can reach while also capturing a good view. PoE reduces the amount of required cabling, resulting in simpler and faster installation.
  • Flexibility: PoE IP CCTV systems will only require the NVR and the PoE switch (if used) to be plugged into a power supply. This provides users with more flexibility when it comes to installation because the cameras can be placed anywhere without having to prioritize being near a power supply.
  • Scalability: Thanks to the flexible and simple installation process, PoE enables businesses to easily scale their CCTV systems. For businesses, time is important but using PoE cuts down on the installation process so that new systems can be up and running in no time. Besides that, the lax wiring requirements means that new cameras can be easily added on or integrated with existing IP systems.
